WHAT IS ECONCON?

EconCon is a student run conference for Economics PhD students. It will consist of two days of academic talks and discussions as well as social events. Its purpose is to give students an opportunity to present their work to a diverse and unfamiliar audience of students from other schools and receive feedback.

We hope the conference will be particularly appealing to those looking to go on the job market next year.

Each presentation will be given an hour and 15 minutes, including time for discussants. Three presentations, divided by sub-field, will take place simultaneously, over the course of two days.

The conference is being sponsored by the Economics Departments of NYU, Columbia University, Princeton University, University of Pennsylvania, and Yale University.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

This year's conference is to be held at NYU on Thursday, August 18 and Friday, August 19, 2011. The deadline for submissions to the conference is Friday, June 10. Submissions should be sent to no later than this date to [email protected]. Papers will be accepted from all fields of Economics.

Please submit an abstract along with a draft of your paper. Your work does not need to be complete by this date. Those whose papers are accepted will have the remainder of the summer to perfect them before the conference. We will notify you if your paper is accepted at the very latest by July 1.

To sign up to attend the conference, please complete the form below.

If you would be interested in acting as a discussant for one of the papers at the conference, please email the above email address with information on your preferred fields.

There are no fees for attending or presenting at the conference, and food and refreshments will be provided thanks to our kind sponsors. However, there will no reimbursement for travel and accommodation expenses. We very much hope that you will be able to cover such expenses from other sources.

MORE DETAILS

The conference will take place in the NYU Economics Department, located at 19 West 4th Street, near Washington Square Park. A map highlighting the Economics Department and nearby subway options can be downloaded here. A more extensive map of the NYU campus can be downloaded here.

We have made a block hotel booking for August 18 at: Club Quarters, Wall Street, New York. The cost is $169 per night, which will be honored three days prior and post. To get this rate you need to call (203) 905-2100 and use the code NYU818 to reserve your room. There is a $ 15.00 charge per extra person per room. The hotel occupancy tax for New York City is 14.75% plus a $3.50 room/per night tax or a $5.50 per suite/per night tax. This room block discount pricing is not guaranteed after July 15. See here for more information on the hotel.

Other economic options include the Pod Hotel with small rooms starting at $159, and cheaper still are various youth hostels with private rooms available from $80. A broader range of options can be found here.

If accommodation cost is an obstacle, we may be able to arrange for you to stay with NYU graduate students, although this option is somewhat limited. Please email us if this is the case.

WHO WE ARE

The conference is being organized by students from from NYU with help from students at Columbia, Princeton, UPenn and Yale. However, the conference aims to have as wide a participant pool as possible.

The conference follows on the back of EconCon 2010, which was held at Princeton last August. The conference received 83 submissions from 27 schools (Barcelona, Berkeley, BU, Brown, Chicago, Columbia, Duke, Harvard, LSE, Maryland, Michigan, UMinn, Northwestern, NYU, Oxford, UPenn, Princeton, Queens, Rochester, Rutgers, Stanford, Toronto, UBC, UCLA, UVA, Wisconsin, Yale) with the final 28 presenters chosen from 17 schools. Approximately 70 students attended each day of the conference. It was a great success.

We hope to continue the conference in future years, with the location changing amongst the schools organizing and funding the enterprise.
