Systems biology is a still expanding field of research aiming to understand at the molecular level how cells, tissues and organism operate in their biological context. Among the key technologies driving this forward are next-generation sequencing and proteomics, as they provide powerful means to determine global expression levels of genes and proteins. Both fields have matured to a degree that they have now become accessible to researchers in many areas of biology. During this course participants will gain theoretical insight in the structure of sequencing and proteomic data, and will receive training in data analysis using various computational tools.

Despite the exciting advances in human genetics over the past decade, the fraction of the human proteome targeted by small molecules remains relatively small compared to the total number of genes linked to a disease phenotype by Mendelian inheritance or genome-wide association studies. Regenerative medicine is based on the ability of stem cells to repair tissue damage. The regenerative capacity of endogenous stem cells decreases with age, is impaired in degenerative diseases, and deregulated in cancer. Minimally invasive liquid biopsies have recently emerged as novel diagnostic methods which hold the promise to monitor disease progression, detect minimal residual disease, therapy resistance and potentially even early cancer detection. Participants will gain hands-on experience in the detection of cell free tumor DNA (cfDNA) using a next generation sequencing (NGS) approach that covers all four mutation classes in a single assay.
